Music Reflection:
One C that I learned a lot about through this performance was communication. This is something I believe to be essential to everything I do in my life and I understood the importance of communicating with music. When you're in a band, you have to be able to work with your team and communicate effectively and quickly so your team can adjust to sudden obstacles. In this case, we were off time while performing all three times, and it was the responsibility of the whole band to get back on beat.
I believe that the rhythm in music is symbolic of consistency in the workplace. In order to succeed in any entrepreneurial profession, you need to consistently put out content. If you don't follow your schedule, it is the responsibility of you and your team to get you back on track. Similarly, you must be attentive to every beat when playing in a band. If anyone is off time, it is the responsibility of the band to help them catch up. Unfortunately, we didn't have consistent rhythm for this performance. However, I still learned a lot about communication in a band through this experience.
Another C that I learned a lot about was cultural competency. Music is a culture, and I focused on learning and following it this year. For example, I analyzed the pieces we played and tried to understand the feeling we were trying to convey. More importantly, I took a step back and looked at our position when playing: we are there to entertain. After realizing this, I made sure to control my actions to make sure they align with my goal: to entertain. I started to show more spirit and alter my tones to match the texture of the piece I was playing. Because of this, I think I definitely improved with cultural competency.
I showed a lot of personality in my playing during this concert. For example, I made sure to start extremely low and quiet for my solo and end with the highest note I could play and the most intensity. I even managed to cram the 'lick' midway through my solo. It took me a while to get that right and I was proud and surprised that I was actually able to pull it off, especially because I had less than a week to practice it. I am very intrigued by my solo style, and plan to explore it more next year. I want to push the boundaries that I previously set for myself and be more creative and bold with my solos next year. I can't wait!
One thing I think I could've improved on was rhythm. I was so focused on getting my solo right that I forgot about keeping a good rhythm while playing. Because of this, our trumpet and rhythm section got off track multiple times during the performance. Although soloing is stressful, I need to learn to be more aware of my section while playing. Basically, I would like learn how to juggle multiple stressful thoughts in my mind and focus on the moment while playing. It is hard to do for someone like me, but it's definitely worth it. If I get better at this, I will be able to contribute in multiple ways and be helpful as much as possible.
