Speech and Debate:
During sophomore to senior year, I participated in San Marin's speech and debate program. This program strengthened my communication and debating skills. I learned how to form arguments and find flaws in them in a short amount of time and it strengthened my confidence during presentation. I am happy I was in this program because I was able to connect with my team and quickly come up with contentions for topics. Debate also strengthened my skill of self-criticism. Debate has made me able to look at my arguments through an objective lens and critique them harshly. During this debate program, I learned how to foresee what opponents would say about my argument and work out rebuttals for them.
I won Undefeated for Junior Varsity and received multiple Winning Records participating for Novice and Junior Varsity.
These skills can be applied to future business presentations because I would need confidence and strong arguments for my proposals. Because the debate program helped me find flaws in arguments easily, I will be able to self-critique my arguments and make them stronger. Additionally, I would be able to foresee what the board would bring up and think of rebuttals or adjust my proposal to fit their needs.
It could also be applied to being on the board during a presentation. With these debate skills, I would be able to find flaws in the proposals and have the confidence to question the flaws.
In conclusion, the San Marin Speech and Debate program taught me a lot of presentation and argumentative skills that will be helpful for future business endeavors. I am grateful for the staff of the debate team and my debate peers for making this opportunity possible.
