Temple Work:
The North Bay Hindu Center is a center created for worship and to promote Indian culture in the north bay area.
When I was free during Sunday evenings, I occasionally went to the center to help the North Bay Hindu community. I often came 15 to 30 minutes before the service so I could help them set up everything needed for the service. I liked helping out here for two reasons: it was something new and fun!
Originally, I wasn't very keen on the idea because it was out of my comfort zone. However, because my parents continued to bring me there, I was able to build a relationship with the kids in the community and God. I still see going there as a refreshing way to start the week. Going there made me feel one with God and like I had a fresh start.
I attended festivals and events held by the community to show support and set up everything. We would host games for the kids to play and recite Hindu shlokahs to bring us closer to God.
Our community wasn't only about promoting the Hindu religion; they also promoted Indian culture.
People of completely different faith visited our events and bonded with our community. We even took part in an Interfaith Service where people of different beliefs all over California met up to support the community.
Our first initiative was building backpacks with basic supplies for families at the detention centers. We collected donations of materials like soap, toothbrushes, towels, scarves, snacks, and more from our communities, filled up the refugee backpacks, and completed over 50 backpacks. Then, they were then delivered to the nearest detention centers by our community leaders.
I liked participating in this community because I am able to work with a diverse group of people to do good for a bigger community. The North Bay Hindu Center has allowed people with completely different beliefs and cultures to put their differences aside to help the greater good. Some pictures are below:
